The Story of Brigid's Cross

The story begins in ancient Ireland.

Tradition tells us that Brigid was called to the bedside of a dying chieftain. As she spoke to him of hope, compassion and new life, she gathered the rushes scattered across the earthen floor and slowly began weaving them into the shape we now recognise as Brigid's Cross. As she explained its meaning, the man found peace, and the woven cross became forever associated with faith, healing and protection.

Over the centuries, families across Ireland continued the tradition, making a new Brigid's Cross each year around Imbolc on 1st February. The crosses were blessed and hung above doors, over fireplaces, in kitchens, barns and byres, where they were believed to guard the home and those within it from fire, lightning, harm and hardship throughout the coming year.

Although deeply connected with Imbolc and Saint Brigid's Day, the cross is far more than a seasonal decoration.

It is a timeless reminder that every home deserves to be a sanctuary—a place of warmth, kindness, healing and welcome.

Our Pilgrimage Story

Every House of Bridie creation begins with a journey.

During my pilgrimages through Glastonbury and, most especially, Kildare in Ireland, I found myself deeply moved by the enduring presence of Brigid. At the beautiful Solas Bhríde Centre, where Brigid's eternal flame continues to burn, I admired the many Brigid's Crosses lovingly displayed as symbols of faith, protection and hope. Their quiet beauty spoke to something deep within me.

While exploring Kildare, I also collected a Brigid's Cross from the cathedral which now sits proudly above our front door alongwith a colourful one of ours at our back & bedroom doors —a treasured reminder of the rich spiritual heritage that has surrounded Brigid for over fifteen centuries.

Together with visits to the sacred wells of Kildare, the White Spring and Chalice Well in Glastonbury, these experiences became the heart and soul of House of Bridie.

When I returned home to Guernsey, I felt inspired to create my own collection of Brigid's Crosses, allowing others to bring this beautiful tradition into their own homes. This first collection is a joyful, modern interpretation of an ancient Irish symbol, handcrafted with love while honouring the timeless spirit and blessings that Brigid represents.

Each cross is gifted alongside our Rose Goddess Altar Essence, lovingly created using sacred waters gathered during those pilgrimages, creating a lasting connection between the sacred places that inspired this collection and the home in which it will hang.

This is only the beginning of the journey. I look forward to creating many more Brigid's Cross designs in the future, each inspired by the landscapes, sacred places and timeless traditions encountered along the pilgrim's path.

Your House of Bridie™ Brigid's Protection Cross has been lovingly handcrafted as a decorative symbol of blessing, peace and protection.

To help preserve its beauty, display your cross indoors in a dry location, away from excessive moisture, direct sunlight and sources of heat. As each piece is individually handmade, gentle handling is recommended.

To preserve the handcrafted weave, please handle your Brigid's Protection Cross with care. The cross is created using traditional weaving techniques with chenille pipe cleaners, and the secured ends may feel slightly firm or pointed in places. While every effort has been made to finish each piece as neatly as possible, gentle handling is recommended. This item is intended as a decorative keepsake and is not a toy. Please display out of the reach of young children and pets, and avoid bending or pulling the woven sections to help maintain its beautiful shape for years to come.

The accompanying Rose Goddess Altar Essence has been created for use as a home and altar blessing spray. Shake gently before each use and lightly mist around your sacred space, doorway, altar or home as desired.
